Gale

Like all sailors
in the world Lipariot ones observe the sky attentively. When they see in
the afternoon small white cumulus clouds gather over the Calbabrian coast
from the sout-east, and if in the same time a light wind blows from the
west, they expect these clouds to develop into a continuous formation, the
"barrone", the "bar". First of a bright white, the bar coming from
the Italian coast turns light grey, then dark grey as it approaches the
islands, and black near the coast (Photo). It is the sign that the libeccio
will die away and the meggiorno shirocco rise. South-east winds met
west winds near summits. The bourrasca stops regular west winds.
It will last ten, twenty, thirty minutes, one hour, rarely longer, reaching
8 or 9 in the Beaufortscale and will be followed for two or three hours
by an east wind that gradually decreases to 5 or 4 on the Beaufortscale,
and temporarily drops for some time.... untill the arrival of the next squall.
